Investing in water for today and tomorrow

A key part of our sustainability plan is to take responsibility for our environmental impact today. We do this by supporting climate focussed, charitable projects around the world, one of which is all about water.

Did you know…

In Mozambique, less than half of the population have access to safe drinking water sources, with access in some rural areas as low as 35%.

One of our key projects this year is certified by the Gold Standard, and supports the four of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, mainly Clean Water & Sanitation.

Why is clean water so crucial?

Over 2,500 children under 5 lose their lives annually in Mozambique due to preventable diseases caused by dirty water and inadequate sanitation. 

The project supports the provision of safe water to hundreds of households within Manica Province in Mozambique using borehole technology. By providing safe water, the project ensures that communities consume less firewood during the process of water purification and as a result, there will be a reduction of CO2e emissions from the burning of wood and vegetation.

Water for your pets on the move

Spring has sprung and temperatures are warming up again. It’s lovely weather to get out with your dog for a walk and take in the beautiful sights and sounds of nature. Keeping our pets hydrated when out on adventures is really important, so what can we do to prepare?

Usually in the UK we have plenty of water sources for our pets to have a quick drink, but there are a couple of things to think about before you head out.

Are you heading to an area without natural water sources for your pet to get a drink (think streams or springs)? If the weather has been hot, your usual drinking spots may have dried out. Warmer temperatures also increase the risk of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) being present in bodies of water. This can be highly toxic to pets, especially dogs, if ingested. These toxins can cause severe health issues, including liver damage, neurological problems, and in some cases, can be fatal.

It's really important to check and prevent your pet from drinking or swimming in water that's suspected of being contaminated and to seek immediate veterinary care if you think your pet may have been exposed.

It’s well worth taking a reusable water bottle out on your travels with you. There are some fantastic options available made from sturdy, recycled materials. Some even have an attached drinking bowl making it really easy to give your pet safe, fresh water on the move.

Water that wildlife will love

It feels like we’ve had a lot of rain this winter, but as we move into Spring it’s a good time to start thinking ahead in case we have a warm, dry summer again.

Countries all around the world are starting to feel the effects of climate change. Here in the UK we’ve seen very hot temperatures and sporadic rain – these can have a big impact on the creatures who share our green spaces and gardens.

This World Water Day, here are 3 things to think about to give your garden guest a hand this summer.

• Put in a pond. It doesn’t have to be a large space, even low, shallow pots and troughs are great for nature. It provides a habitat for breeding and feeding, just be sure to provide ramps to help your visitors to get in and out with ease.
• Give the birds a bath. A shallow space for rainwater to collect (and you to top up when it’s dry) gives a place for birds to meet, bath, sing and drink (sounds like fun!).
• Help them hydrate. Placing a low bowl of water in your garden can be a lifeline for birds, insects, and small animals to take a drink, especially in urban areas where natural sources are scarce.

These simple acts of kindness can help support your local ecosystem and make your garden a little haven for wildlife.
