Can cats eat eggs?
Cats are obligate carnivores
This means they have to eat meat to survive. To maintain the sugar needed in their blood, they break down protein rather than carbohydrates. Since eggs are a protein-packed animal product, this makes them a suitable food for cats. But, they are not recommended as the primary food source.
Egg whites are made up of mainly protein and no fat. On the other hand, egg yolks consist of fat with some protein. If your cat is overweight, it is worth noting that egg yolks are not the best choice for them due to the fat content adding extra calories.
Eggshells are pretty unpalatable for obvious reasons, so your cat is unlikely to want to eat them. If you do find your cat is partial to a bit of eggshell, it won’t make them sick, but equally, it’s not a good food source for them. It’s best not to feed them eggshells.
So, what kind of eggs can your cat eat? Cooked or raw?
Can cats eat cooked eggs?
Yes! Plain scrambled, poached, or hard-boiled are the best options, so you know they are fully cooked. Avoid feeding them the salt, pepper, and butter that might accompany your plate of eggs. Feed eggs separately or mixed into their regular food.
If you are looking to increase the amount of protein in your cat’s diet without adding too many calories, it is best just to feed the egg white. You can feed up to one tablespoon a day.
Can cats eat raw eggs?
Raw eggs are not a good thing to feed your cat. It’s a definite no!
The main issue with feeding your cat raw eggs is the risk of them getting a Salmonella infection. Salmonella is a nasty bacteria that can cause severe illness in animals and humans. It can even be fatal, so make sure you only feed properly cooked eggs to your cat. Luckily, it’s pretty uncommon in eggs sourced from the UK, but it’s best not to take any risks.
Can kittens eat eggs?
Eggs are a perfect treat for your kitten but only in small amounts. For them to grow properly, kittens need a complete formulated diet. If you want to give your kitten a little egg, ensure it is fully cooked and without fat and seasoning.
If you are unsure what to feed your cat or kitten and need some extra dietary advice, it is best to consult your vet or a nutritionist for advice.
