How to prepare to get a cat

What do I need to have at home when I get a cat? Here you will get tips on accessories and equipment that are good to have when you get your cat or kitten home.

Cat accessories

Food and water bowls

You need food and water bowls when the cat moves in. Tip is to get bowls that are easy to wash and that last over time. Wide, shallow bowls are good, so the cat's whiskers don't touch the edges.

Transport crate

Buy a really good and sturdy crate that you can have throughout the cat's life. The transport crate often works very well also as a resting place in the home. Get the cat used to it early to make it easier for future transport, for example to the vet or when you take the cat on trips.

Collar or harness and leash

If you intend to have an outdoor cat, it is good to have a collar.. Consider choosing one with a safety buckle.

If you have an indoor cat, but want to be able to take it outside sometimes, a harness and a leash are good to have at home. It is a good idea to get your cat used to the harness early.

Food

What should the cat eat? Check with the breeder or previous owner what the cat has eaten before. If that food worked well for the cat, it is good to continue with it even when the cat moves in with you. If you change the feed, make sure to do it gradually.

Cat box with accessories

You need at least one litter box when you get a cat. You also need accessories such as cat litter and a shovel to clean out of the box. Be careful to clean out the box at least once a day. More cats, means more litter boxes, cats rarely like to share.

Scratching boards

Have scratching boards at home from day one. Partly so that the cat can keep its claws in trim and mark territory, but also so that you don't have your interior torn apart. If you have space, it is good to have several scratching boards in the home. Claw trees where the cat can both scratch, climb and escape are often appreciate by your feline friend.

Toothbrush

Brushing your cat's teeth can reduce the risk of future problems in the their mouth. Therefore, it is recommended to gently accustom your cat to tooth brushing right from the start.

Claw pliers

Some cats may need help keeping their claws in good shape, so it's handy to have some clippers at home.

Accessories for fur care

Depending on what kind of fur your cat has, they require different amounts of care. Be sure to find out what exactly your cat needs to keep its coat nice and well-groomed. It can be anything from brushes to grooming equipment.
