Dogs can gain weight due to changed energy needs, poorer stamina and less play after being neutered, so it is not unusual for your dog to gain a little weight. Your dog should not be overweight however.

You can find out your dogs right weight by researching the specific breed. A Springer Spaniel for example can weigh around 18-25kg, whereas a Dachshund can weigh anywhere between 3-9kg.

Different breeds have different physiques, but in general you can say that when you feel your dog's chest, the ribs should be felt without you having to touch firmly.

You can often tell just by looking at a dog if they have gained weight or look obese.

You can help your dog lose weight by reducing or changing their feed and making sure to exercise more with your dog. Go for longer walks in different environments, make the dog more active.

Don't let your dog beg for food and don't give it food scraps either as this will certainly have an impact on weight. Remember not to give the dog too many treats either, only give dog treats in small amounts.

When do I need to see a vet?

If your overweight dog does not lose weight even after giving smaller food portions and exercising more, you should see a veterinarian to determine if there is an underlying cause for the excess weight.
